In the beginning
Brown grew up in a small Georgia mountain town as one of the youngest children in a large family. In fact, Brown’s oldest brother was more than two decades older, and exposed him to a wide range of music at a young age. Several members of Brown’s family were musically inclined, and he started taking guitar lessons when he was only 7 years old. By the time Brown reached high school, he was performing solo gigs locally, and went to college on a vocal scholarship.
During his time in college, Brown switched majors several times and continued playing music to pay for school. He formed a short-lived group, Far from Einstyne, but it quickly disbanded except for Brown and the drummer. The duo continued to tour under the same name until Brown formed the Zac Brown Band. The group was formed under the tenet that each member had equitable say in the music created, and the Zac Brown Band soon began touring at breakneck speed.
Rise to fame
The want to perform at a consistently elevated level and to deliver that energy to listeners drove Brown to seek out a handful of musicians that embodied the same musical ideals. Once formed Zac Brown Band exploded onto the scene with tours that were loaded with concert performance dates. Taking time out only to record and release albums “Far from Einstyne” 2004, “Home Grown” 2005, “The Foundation” 2008 and “You Get What You Give” 2010, the band has continued to tour at a frenzied pace.
Brown started his label, Home Grown, in 2003. The Zac Brown Band released two albums under Home Grown while it remained unsigned. By the mid-2000s, the group had hit the road full time and had a more consistent lineup with Jimmy De Martini, John Driskell Hopkins, Coy Bowles and Chris Fryar. While the band’s debut studio album The Foundation had a shaky start, Atlantic stepped in and distributed the record nationally in 2008.
Soon after the release of “Home Grown” the band performed at the 2006 Bonnaroo Music Festival, exposing the boys to an even wider audience set. In 2008 the band’s first single “Chicken Fried” hit the country music charts followed by singles “Whatever It Is,” “Toes” and “Highway 20 Ride” topping the U.S. and Canadian charts. Since taking off with its debut album The Foundation in 2008, the Zac Brown Band has released several platinum albums.
By 2009, the single “Chicken Fried” had gone platinum and the Zac Brown Band added Clay Cook to the lineup. In total, The Foundation included four singles that would peak atop the charts in the No. 1 position. That year, the group toured to support the album and wrote new material on the road. The Zac Brown Band racked up dozens of award nominations, and in 2010 earned a Grammy Award for best new artist.
Zac Brown Band played subsequent Bonnaroo lineups in 2009 and 2010, as well as performing with Dave Matthews Band. A star that exemplifies a similar Caribbean, laid-back vibe, Jimmy Buffett made an appearance on “Knee Deep,” a single off the band’s 2010 album. With all of the band’s musical and philosophical depth and breadth, amazingly they are still tucked away neatly into the country music genre.
