|The Winnipeg Jets, formerly known as the Atlanta Thrashers, hold their home games at the MTS Centre. Originally founded in 1999, the team played as the Thrashers based in Atlanta proper until they were purchased in 2011 and relocated to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. While the team has yet to make its mark on Canada's impressive NHL record, they have developed a strong fan following who pick up Winnipeg Jets tickets at every opportunity. |
Prior to moving, the Jets played as the Atlanta Thrashers from 1999 through 2011. The Thrashers became a team after an NHL expansion, and the franchise qualified for the Stanley Cup playoffs just once over the more than decade-long stay. The team's 2011 name change would lead to a better go of it than the Thrashers had in their title-less 12 year history.
Rumors began to swirl in late 2009 that True North Sports & Entertainment, the company that owns the MTS Centre, was looking to purchase the Thrashers to bring a team to Winnipeg. True North's chairman, Mark Chipman, had strong relationships with a number of NHL owners, and by 2011, the gossip became a reality.
Winnipeg hockey fans appeared to be thrilled with the delivery of their new team, which shone through when Winnipeg Jets tickets sold out within 17 minutes of sale time in June, 2011. After the success of these sales the team established a waiting list that was shut down in two hours after having 8,000 people sign up.
As members of the Western conference, the Jets rubbed elbows and hip-checked with the big boys like the Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings and Canadian brethren, the Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames. With 2013's conference realignment, the Winnipeg Jets join the Eastern Conference, introducing new teams to their repertoire of rivalries.
With a new name and an intense game, the Winnipeg Jets, offer fans serious action on their home ice at the MTS Centre and at away games. Jets fans, based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, benefit not only from having a relatively new hockey team, but a program that's got staying power.
Despite their relatively new start, the Jets have already earned a Division Championship title (as the Thrashers) and are still working toward Stanley Cup status. A clean slate awaits the new Winnipeg natives and they have the ability to scribe their own future on the ice. Hopefully for hometown fans that future path leads to a plethora of conference and division championship title, Presidents' Trophies and the desirable Stanley Cup win. Fans who enjoy having a home team can pick up Winnipeg Jets tickets to cheer on key players. Buy your Winnipeg Jets tickets while you still can!
