Beginnings
Tyler Joseph, Nick Thomas and Chris Salih formed Twenty One Pilots in 2009 and rapidly built up a regional following with indefatigable touring and grassroots social media. Known for their vibrant lyricism and fast-paced pop sound, Twenty One Pilots released a self-titled debut independently in the year of the band’s formation. The three members were college friends studying at Ohio State University. By 2011, Thomas and Salih both left the group due to other obligations. Josh Dun, a drummer who had previously played with House of Heroes, joined Joseph and the two became the new faces of Twenty One Pilots.

Mainstream success
The band continued to gain fans in the Midwest with energetic live shows and Joseph and Dun released a second independent album titled Regional at Best. A sold-out show in Columbus at Newport Music Hall brought numerous labels scrambling to sign Twenty One Pilots, and the duo ultimately selected Fueled by Ramen, an imprint of Atlantic Records. However, the band continued to show an immense loyalty to its fans and introduced two unreleased songs via an email newsletter.

In 2012, Twenty One Pilots released its first studio EP, Three Songs. After a short bout touring with Neon Trees and Walk the Moon, the duo sat down and crafted their first full-length studio album, Vessel. The album was released at the beginning of 2013, and the single “Holding on to You” reached the No. 11 position on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart. Overall, Vessel reached No. 58 on the Billboard 200 and several songs from the album garnered radio play internationally. The duo performed a slew of live events and made numerous television appearances, including a performance of the single “Car Radio” on Late Night with Seth Meyers. By 2014, Twenty One Pilots became a hot commodity for summer festivals. Joseph and Dun took show requests from various cities across the U.S. for the Quiet Is Violent World Tour in fall 2014.
