The Devil Makes Three released their first self-titled album on Nov. 1, 2002 under their own Monkey Wrench label. The record focused on songs about drinking and getting through difficult times. Two years later came their second album, Longjohns, Boots and a Belt, which blended ragtime and country blues, and offered more serious and insightful lyrics by Bernhard. In 2006, The Devil Makes Three came out with a live album, called A Little Bit Faster and a Little Bit Worse. On some tracks, the trio welcomed a fourth member - Chojo Jacques, who played the fiddle.

I'm A Stranger Here, which came out in 2013, was one of their most popular albums and was produced by Buddy Miller. Bernhard was responsible for writing more than 20 songs for the record. However, not all of them made it to the album. Miller only chose the tracks that reflected a gloomy and somber mood.
