I saw the show in Chicago and loved it. I live in L.A. and want to see it again here. The only problem I had was the lights coming up too soon after the tear-jerking ending...I can't let everybody see me getting misty!!!

WENT TO SEE THIS PLAY FOR MY BIRTHDAY , BUT WOULD SEE IT AGAIN IN A HEARTBEAT. AWESOME ACTORS/ ACTRESSES SOUND WAS AWESOME. THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES!
I saw the show 4 times on Broadway with and without Fantasia. She was just as good in Atlanta, but I was so disappointed with the woman who played Shug Avery. The original Shug, sorry I can't remember her name, had a much better vocal range and had the NY audiences on their feet. I was waiting for some outstanding singing, but it didn't happen. There was also more kissing between Shug and Celie in this version. It was very unnecessary.
Beware if you are planning to see Fantasia in DC. Not all shows are starring Fantasia even though that is what is advertised. Overall I would have to say that it was OK. Maybe Fantasia playing Celie would have made the difference. I don't know, but I was very dissappointed to get a ticket to see Fantasia in the Color Purple and not be able to.
