The band’s sound is a mixture of hard rock and alternative metal, which its pair with provocative and often violent lyricism to define a subset of the metal genre all its own. Before System of a Down came to be, two of the group’s members were in a related project known as Soil. The group consisted of Daron Malakin and Serj Tankian along with Dave Hakopyan and Domingo Laranio. They recorded together in Southern California for the better part of two years, undergoing several lineup changes throughout this period. Between 1992 and 1994, Soil developed a sound similar to that of System of a Down, but didn’t experience the commercial breakthrough they were hoping for. Ultimately, Laranio and Hakopyan left the group to pursue other interests, opening the door for new additions to the group’s roster and a more honed sound.

Modern lineup and rise to fame
Ultimately, System of a Down came to include John Dolmayan on drums, Tankian on vocals and rhythm guitar, Malakian on vocals and guitar and Shavo Odadjian playing bass. Between 1995 and 1997, the group recorded four demo tapes and played at a number of high profile venues across California. While the first three demo tapes would later be released, the fourth was circulated among record companies to gain notoriety. The band would eventually catch the attention of Rick Rubin, who signed them to Columbia records in 1997. They began recording with Rubin’s guidance and released an eponymous debut full-length album in early summer 1998.

Other releases and commercial success
Since dropping System of a Down in 1998, the band has gone on to reach incredible heights of fame by forging its metal-rock sound. In the years that have followed, SOAD has put out four other full-length albums, including Toxicity, Mesmerize, Steal this Album! and Hypnotize. They have been nominated for four Grammy Awards, and won Best Hard Rock Performance for their song “B.Y.O.B.” in 2006. Toxicity would prove to be among the highest points in the band’s commercial career, being certified platinum three times over and establishing them as an international phenomenon. Though it has taken several breaks throughout the years, System of a Down continues to tour and wow audiences to this day.
