Early life
Harvey’s success did not come without considerable struggle. Born in West Virginia, Harvey’s family relocated to Cleveland for much of his youth. Harvey didn’t become involved in comedy until after his younger years. He attended both Kent State and West Virginia University as a student, and first started performing stand-up comedy in the mid-1980s. He would continue to perform at open mic nights for the rest of that decade, often sleeping in his car as he was homeless for several of these years. His first true big break came in 1990, when Harvey took second place in the renowned “Johnnie Walker National Comedy Search.”

Rise to fame
Taking the runner-up spot at the search was the springboard that Harvey needed to accelerate his career. After former host Mark Curry left the show, Harvey took over for him on “It’s Showtime at the Apollo.” He was received extremely well in this role and began to be recognized by mainstream television networks. For roughly six years, he starred in his own program on the WB Network, “The Steve Harvey Show.” He was also a leading character in another sitcom, which aired on ABC, “Me and the Boys.” These engagements defined Harvey’s on-screen career from the mid-1990s until the early 2000s. During this period he also toured as a stand-up comedian, and began to gain the national spotlight.

Other ventures
As he was gaining attention in the worlds of both stand-up comedy and television, Harvey was also making his mark in other mediums. He authored two books, “Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man” and “Steve Harvey’s Big Time.” In 2010, Harvey entered the largest role of his television career when he was selected to become the host of the popular family game show “Family Feud.” He began hosting and co-hosting multiple radio programs, drawing listeners from the comedy community to mainstream talk radio and becoming a fixture on the airwaves. Harvey has also appeared in several high-profile feature-length films including “Johnson Family Vacation,” “Love Don’t Cost a Thing,” “Madea Goes to Jail” and “You Got Served.”
