The founding members of Slipknot came together through a mutual interest in Iowa’s musical scene during the mid-1990s. Some of them already had established friendships with one another, but found that their core crew played well together and gelled stylistically, laying the foundation for a professional career. After playing together for almost a year and beginning to develop a signature sound, the group independently released Mate, Feed, Kill, Repeat on Halloween in 1996. This demo drew the group attention not only in the Iowa music scene but also from major record labels. As they began to play regional concerts to larger and larger crowds, the labels took more notice. Ultimately, this culminated in Roadrunner Records signing the group in July 1998.
Rise to fame
The band wasted no time using the resources laid out in front of it by its newfound label. In June 1999, an eponymous debut album was released to considerable commercial success. In addition to earning the group touring dates both domestic and international, the record also went on to be certified platinum for selling over 1 million copies. In August 2001, the group released Iowa, its sophomore album, and saw its fame grow further. The album gave birth to a world tour of the same name. While the group was doing extremely well commercially, it went through a brief two-year hiatus before producing its next album, Vol. 3 (The Subliminal Verses), which came out in 2004.
Other work and critical acclaim
Since 2004, Slipknot has released at least two other albums: All Hope is Gone and 5: The Gray Chapter, which came out in 2008 and 2014. The band continues to produce new music and has been recognized time and time again for its ingenuity in metal. Among many other impressive accolades, Slipknot has been nominated for a total of eight Grammys. The band won the 2006 Grammy award for Best Metal Performance for its song “Before I Forget.”
