A change in sound
Born and raised in Texas, Cabrera always enjoyed music as a hobby, and was part of a high school punk band called Caine. After being exposed to Dave Matthews, Cabrera set aside his electric guitar for a softer acoustic sound. He soon dropped out of high school, moved on from Caine and started performing with the fledgling band Rubic’s Groove. The group made a splash on the Dallas music scene and garnered a fan base that had it opening for headliners such as Third Eye Blind, Ben Harper and Cheap Trick.

In time, Cabrera departed the band in pursuit of other ventures. His brother purchased him a block of studio time as a birthday present. In his paid slot, Cabrera laid down three songs that impressed a studio engineer enough to allow him to record a full-length album free of charge. Titled Elm Street, Cabrera’s debut was a self-released success. Besides being a local hit, Elm Street earned Cabrera critical acclaim. The album sold out and by 2001 Cabrera had signed with Atlantic Records.

Rise to fame
The artist’s first studio release, Take It All Away, hit stores in late summer 2004. Spearheaded by the single “On the Way Down,” the album went certified double platinum and brought Cabrera’s name into the national spotlight. Produced by John Rzeznik of the Goo Goo DollsTake It All Away brought about three singles that landed on the U.S. Billboard pop chart. The following year, Cabrera’s sophomore album, You Stand Watching, went certified gold and included the hits “Shine On" and “Photo."

In 2006, Cabrera released the single “I Will Remember You,” which was used on various television programs, including the series finale closing montage of “Will & Grace.” By 2014, Cabrera signed with Dynamite Music, and late in the year released the single “House on Fire” of his new EP scheduled for release in spring 2015.
