I have attended ROTR two years in a row, and just bought tickets for a 3rd year. I know that in it's first year there were a ton of complaints. I wasn't there. However, I was SO impressed with the 2010 ROTR and enjoyed 2011. It is an amazing value to see SO many bands.
The cheaper tickets (where you can't go on the field) are actually great, as you get to sit down. The field tickets let you do both and this is the first year we are buying those.
It is a nice, long weekend full of rock. You have SO many options and the main stage is shared with an eclectic mix of rock and roll.
BY FAR, this is our favorite concert that has more than one main act. ROTR 2010 was my first experience with Rob Zombie and he puts on the MOST AMAZING show. The tickets are worth it for THAT show alone. It's more than a concert with him. It's an experience, a movie, a horror show...amazing.
Just a tip - DO NOT BRING YOUR CHILDREN. This is a rock concert and is all weekend, the onyl bad experiences I've had is when people bring their kids!
You cannot leave the grounds, so don't forget to bring a small backpack (SMALL, they don't let big bags in) with some water and snacks. Stuff is a bit pricey, but it's a concert.
Don't drive there, take a taxi if you can.
We come from Michigan and make the drive, there area ton of hotels that are like 4 miles away and a 10.00 cab ride - worth it.
The vendors are fun, and the side stages over the last two years have evolved to have bigger names mixed with smaller/newcomers and the layout no longer makes the side stages (that play simultaneously sometimes) compete.
You get to do meet and greets if you are willing to give up your time and wait in a line....for most concerts, except the ones late at night.
Totally amazing value and we've been to dozens and dozens of concerts. We make the drive, and spend the money.
However, Friday night - they tried to make it mroe of a fan experience in 2012 and frankly, its not worth it (its free with your tix, so can't really complain)... we aren't attending it this year.
And FYI, I know this is odd, but stay Friday night, you cant' check into hotels until 3/4pm so you may end up missing a lot of Saturday's earlier bands if you wait to check in.
PS. get out of your taxi right at the entrance and walk the few blocks in. Or you'll pay 20.00 to sit in a long line. If you ARE parking ther,e get there SUPER early.
