The Red Hot Chili Peppers are hands down one of the most successful alternative rock bands to emerge from the 1980s. Formed in Los Angeles in 1983, the only original members on the current roster include Anthony Kiedis and Michael “Flea” Balzary. Recipients of multiple Grammy Awards, RHCP have sold more than 65 million albums, topped the charts with their singles and hang their hats proudly in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Fusing their take on funk rock with alternative and a drop of punk, the Chili Peppers have carved out a niche for themselves that will forever. While the Chili Peppers had a dedicated, cult following, their self-titled debut album did little to reflect the band’s energetic live style for which they were known. Between the over-polished sound of the album and mounting tensions between members, RHCP made changes to their lineup and moved forward. Their sophomore album “Freaky Styley” was produced by George Clinton of Parliament/Funkadelic, and though the effort helped to further define the band’s unique style, it also achieved little success on the charts. In 1987 RHCP released their third musical effort, which was the first album that charted. Unfortunately the mild success of “The Uplift Mofo Party Plan” wouldn’t be celebrated for long as drug addictions spiraled out of control and the death of guitarist Hillel Slovak impacted Kiedis greatly. The band filled open positions with a past Dead Kennedys percussionist and a mate of Clinton’s on guitar. Both positions would be swapped again before the band headed into the studio for their fourth album.
The release of “Mother’s Milk” saw the band achieve their first real charting success, with the album going Platinum and Gold in the US and Canada, respectively. Singles “Knock Me Down” and “Higher Ground” fared the best commercially. Then in 1991 the Chili Peppers released “Blood Sugar Sex Magick,” in what became their signature effort and most widely known album. Singles like “Under the Bridge,” “Give it Away,” “Suck My Kiss” and “Breaking the Girl” can still be heard current day from frat houses to hipster parties. RHCP followed up their success by jumping on the Lollapalooza wagon in 1992. Subsequent releases “One Hot Minute,” “Californication,” “By the Way,” “Stadium Arcadium” and “I’m with You” continued to pave the way to the band’s continued success.
