Early years
The group was originally formed in Columbus, Ohio, in 1999. The lineup since then has consisted of Gary Levox as the frontman and lead vocalist, Joe Don Rooney playing guitar and singing backup vocals and Jay Demarcus playing bass and keyboards as well as also singing backup vocals. The three came together at the recommendation of friends to play at a nightclub in the Printer’s Alley neighborhood of Nashville, where DeMarcus was living at the time, and instantly began vibing with one another. After that show, the three began to record together and play more frequently, quickly earning the attention of several producers. In particular, they caught the eye of Doug Howard, a representative from Lyric Street Records. Howard had the trio come into the Lyric Street offices to record a three-song demo, and they were signed to the label late in 1999.

Rise to fame
The group wasted no time beginning to record music professionally, ultimately releasing their first record, Rascal Flatts, in early 2000. The album gained steam extremely quickly, largely driven by the success of its lead single, “Prayin’ for Daylight,” which peaked in the No. 3 position on the Billboard Country chart. Riding the success of their first record, Rascal Flatts began to tour around the country through their backing from Lyric Street. As their touring presence grew and their fan base expanded, the group quickly got to work on their second album. In 2002, the band put out Melt, which was also a commercial success. The group would reach new heights with their 2004 record Feels Like Today, which featured the hit singles “Fast Cars and Freedom,” “Skin,” “Bless the Broken Road” and the title track “Feels Like Today.”

Further work and critical acclaim
Since the release of Feels Like Today, Rascal Flatts has put out six more records. They include Me and My Gang, Still Feels Good, Unstoppable, Nothing Like This, Changed and Rewind. They have also put out several greatest hits compilations and live albums. The band has toured nearly nonstop throughout its career, filling up arenas all over the country with their country rock anthems. In 2006, Rascal Flatts won a Grammy award for Best Country Song for their smash hit, “Bless the Broken Road.”
