The band formed in 2006 in Syracuse and experienced a far more rapid ascent to fame than many of its contemporaries. The group first joined forces in January of that year, found that the respective styles of its individual members clicked well, and had recorded a demo by February. As the band began to play more shows at house parties and bars around the Syracuse community and campus, it was also gaining widespread notoriety through other sources. The group received high praise from a number of music blogs and attracted the attention of Rebel Group Records, who signed it to a deal that same year. The band released an eponymously titled EP in 2007 under Rebel.
Rise to fame and major label signing
With the backing of Rebel Records, Ra Ra Riot quickly began to seize new opportunities that were coming its way. The band went on two small European tours as a headlining act, a move which helped to greatly bolster its international audience. Upon its return to the U.S., the band had the privilege of opening for bigger-name acts, such as The Editors and Tokyo Police Club, on domestic tours. Regrettably, tragedy struck the band in mid-2007, when its original drummer, John Pike, was found on a beach in Massachusetts, having drowned. He had disappeared following a party the night prior and a search party located his body relatively quickly. The group continued on, though, replacing his slot with drummer Kenny Bernard. In May of 2008, the group moved to major label Barsuk Records and released The Rhumb Line, its debut full-length album, in August of that year.
Critical acclaim and other work
The Rhumb Line was a commercial success and brought the band to new heights of fame. It began to receive booking requests from far more venues and major festivals, bringing it to every corner of the U.S. and on several more international touring legs. Since the release of The Rhumb Line, Ra Ra Riot has put out two more full length studio albums and a number of singles under Barsuk. The two records are The Orchard and Beta Love, which were released in 2010 and 2013, respectively.
