Porgy and Bess Theater Tickets

Whether it's Rhapsody in Blue or An American in Paris, George and Ira Gershwin have composed some of the most famous music of all time, and that includes for the opera Porgy and Bess. Based on the novel Porgy by DuBose Heyward, the show has been a favorite among theater buffs for decades, and today many fans still clamor for Porgy and Bess tickets.

Sometimes considered an American folk opera, the story tells the struggles of Porgy, a beggar living in Charleston, South Carolina. However, finding money isn't the only thing on his mind. He is also dedicated to freeing Bess from her lover, a dock worker named Crown, as well as a drug dealer named Sportin' Life.

Much like many of the Gershwins other work, Porgy and Bess features some of the best music to hit the stage. However, the opera is especially well-known for the song "Summertime," which has become a pop culture icon and covered by the likes of Sam Cooke, Ella Fitzgerald and Janis Joplin.

Porgy and Bess tells a timeless story that appeals to even the most casual opera fans, and with such classic characters and songs it's easy to see why.
