Formed in 1983 at the University of Vermont, Phish settled into their lineup by 1985. Jamming together for almost 20 years, Phish unofficially parted ways in 2004.
In 2009 Trey Anastasio, Mike Gordon, Jon Fishman and Page McConnell reunited for three shows. Phish tickets for the shows were snatched up, and they played to a sold out audience. Following these Virginia shows the band got back together, resuming their former touring activities.
Blending elements of jazz, psychedelic rock, funk, bluegrass, reggae, country and blues, Phish produced adventurous, ever-changing music. Well-known for extended jams, improvisation and musical exploration, Phish thrived with relatively little radio play or mainstream exposure. The exchange of live recordings and sales that topped 8 million albums and DVDs in the United States alone, the band flourished through word of mouth by a dedicated following of phans.
Recognized for their down-to-earth persona, members Mike Gordon and John Fishman took things to the grassroots level in 1998, jamming all night long with Grateful Dead tribute band Dark Star Orchestra at Martyrs’ to celebrate the Chicago-based band’s one year anniversary.
Normally billed as a single act, Phish has played with the likes of the Violent Femmes and Carlos Santana as well as at the first annual H.O.R.D.E. festival. Like the Grateful Dead before them, each Phish show is a moment in history with a shifting set list that never repeats.
