Pearl Jam Concert Tickets

One of the most recognizable bands in the American alternative rock and grunge movements, Pearl Jam first formed in Seattle in 1990. The group’s lineup has undergone some change over the years, but has held fast to four perennial members: Mike McCready on guitar, Jeff Ament on bass, Stone Gossard on guitar and frontman Eddie Vedder, singing lead vocals. The group has had five different drummers throughout the course of its career, with Matt Cameron (also of Soundgarden fame) currently holding that seat since joining the group in 1998. Refusing to adhere to the standards of the music industry, this band has truly formed their own signature sound and helped to form the American alternative rock space. Pearl Jam’s origins are rooted in the demise of another noteworthy grunge band, Green River. Gossard and Ament were touring with that band when the group split due to creative differences. Ultimately, the two began playing with other musicians around Seattle in a group called Mother Love Bone. That band experienced light commercial success, but only released one album before its third member, vocalist Andrew Wood, died of a heroin overdose. Ament and Gossard began playing with McCready and started to record a demo. The three were put in touch with Eddie Vedder by a mutual friend - former Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Jack Irons - and sent Vedder a demo tape which he recorded vocals over. Vedder came up to Seattle for an audition, and the group was born.

Commercial Success
The band has enjoyed a lengthy and successful career that has spanned more than two decades. It released 10 studio albums between 1991 and 2013 including Ten, Vs., Vitalogy, No Code, Yield, Binaural, Riot Act, Pearl Jam, Backspacer and Lightning Bolt. Its also received a remarkable amount of critical acclaim including a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album in 1995 for Vs. as well as nine nominations for American Music Awards resulting in five actual awards. Established as a regular touring act, Pearl Jam routinely sells out some of the biggest venues and arenas in the U.S. and around the world. It’s estimated that its record sales are over 60 million units throughout their entire career, with more than half of those thought to have been made in the United States.

Creating their own rules
Pearl Jam may be as famous for its refusal to adhere to common practices in the music industry as it is for its music. Throughout the course of its career the band has frequently expressed a sort of discomfort with its level of fame. After winning a 1993 MTV Video Music Award for its song “Jeremy,” the group refused to make any more music videos despite pressure from its label. The group has also been incredibly outspoken regarding political topics including raising awareness for Crohn’s disease, discouraging voters from supporting the presidential campaign of George W. Bush and encouraging the pro-choice movement.
