Starting in 1939, the team made their rounds on the basketball circuit as an independent team before joining the National Basketball League in 1946. When they jumped ship in Syracuse to head Philadelphia, a naming contest was held to assign the team a shiny new moniker. The new 76ers were named after the Declaration of Independence signing of 1776. Three years later the team joined the NBA.
Frequently referred to by their Sixers handle, the 76er’s have earned themselves a number of division, conference and championship titles. The team has been graced by almost every big name in basketball history including Wilt Chamberlain, Julius Erving, Moses Malone, Charles Barkley and Allen Iverson. With such a deep history comes deep rivalries like the one between the 76ers and the Boston Celtics. While that heated rivalry has been laying low since the 1980s, the Sixers have been developing another with the Detroit Pistons.
