The Twins came into existence in the early 1960s when the then-president of the Washington Senators, Calvin Griffith, decided to move his team to Minneapolis. The Senators had been located in Washington, D.C., for several decades but chose to move for a combination of reasons, both fiscal and performance-related. During the 1961 season, the team, which had then been renamed the Twins, struggled in its new city and finished seventh in the American League. That offseason, though, the team made some key personnel acquisitions and built its skill level. The hard work paid off quickly, as the Twins jumped to a second place finish in the American League in 1962. The team would continue to improve over the next few years, ultimately rewarding its fans by winning the American League pennant several years later in 1965. Though they failed to win the World Series that year, the stage was set for victory and the Twins were in Minnesota to stay.
Twins fans have been presented with no shortage of reasons to celebrate, as the team has presented its loyal following with a fair amount of postseason success over its history. The first American League pennants that the team earned came while the franchise was still located in Washington, D.C. During that era, the squad won the AL pennant in 1924, 1925 and 1933, and it also went on to win the club’s first World Series in 1924. Following the move to Minnesota, the Twins continued their run of postseason excellence. The team won the AL pennant in 1965, 1987 and 1991, and went on to win the World Series in both 1987 and 1991. During the early years in Minnesota, when the team still played in the West Division, it won its division four times as of 2015, having done so in 1969, 1970, 1987 and 1991. After moving to the Central Division, the team has won six division titles as of 2015, all occurring between 2002 and 2010.
Target Field opened on April 12, 2010, and seats approximately 40,000 screaming Twins fans. The field is designed for visibility, offering a completely open concourse so fans can see the field no matter where they are in the stadium. There’s no better place in Minnesota to catch a baseball game!
