A knack for the spotlight
Born Destiny Hope Cyrus, Miley is the daughter of Billy Ray Cyrus, the country artist famous for penning the ditty “Achy Breaky Heart.” She earned the nickname “Smiley” at a young age, but it was eventually shortened. At age 8, her family uprooted from their farm to Toronto, Canada, so Billy Ray could act on the show “Doc.” The younger Cyrus began taking singing and acting lessons and made her debut appearance on her father’s show.

By age 11, Cyrus was auditioning to play the lead in the Disney series “Hannah Montana.” The producers thought she was too young, but persistence paid off and in early 2006, the first episode of the series was aired to immediate widespread commercial success. In no time, Cyrus became a teen idol, and Hannah Montana merchandise, books and a film were in the works. By 2007, Cyrus released her first self-credited single to reach the Billboard Top 100, “Ready, Set, Don’t Go,” which was recorded with her father.

In summer of the same year, Cyrus released Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus, which went quadruple platinum. After releasing her follow up album Breakout in 2008, it was clear Cyrus had become a worldwide sensation. At age 16, Cyrus became the youngest artist to have four albums reach the No. 1 position atop the charts. “Hannah Montana: The Movie” premiered in 2009 and the film and soundtrack both received tremendous commercial acclaim.

International superstardom
While she had developed a global reputation for her work with Disney, Cyrus began defining herself as an artist in her later teen years. She starred in “The Last Song,” a movie based off of a romance novel by popular author Nicholas Sparks. This film ushered Cyrus into a more adult role, and the fourth and final season of “Hannah Montana” came to a close in January 2011. During the months that the final season aired, Cyrus’ third album, Can’t Be Tamed, rose into the Billboard charts Top 10. After a brief international tour, Cyrus announced that she intended to focus on acting. She soon returned to music, but cut and dyed her hair and seemingly made a point of removing the Hannah Montana persona. She signed with RCA Records in 2013 and by October of that year released her fourth full-length, titled Bangerz. The album quickly went platinum and earned Cyrus her first Grammy nomination for best pop vocal album.
