The Hurricanes have a storied history of winning, having been a national college basketball force since the late 1990s. Under the guidance of coach Leonard Hamilton, the team won their first Big East Conference title in 2000. In 2004, Coach Frank Haith led the Hurricanes to two NCAA tournament appearances. When Coach Jim Larranaga took over as head coach in 2011, he quickly led Miami to the Sweet 16 two seasons later.

A huge amount of support from the fan section known as the Storm Surge, which is mainly comprised of students from the University, played a significant part in the national exposure of the basketball program. Founded in 2011, the Surge has developed into one of the most recognized fan bases in all of college sports, wearing the team’s colors at every home game.
