The five-time Grammy-award winning artist has gained experience across the board as a photographer, songwriter, Southern-culture historian, TV show host and country music archivist throughout his career. Marty Stuart is well-known for his stint in Johnny Cash's band in 1980 as well as his work with Doc Watson, Earl Scruggs and Jerry Sullivan. After five years in Cash's band, Stuart left to pursue his solo career. Shortly after, he signed with Columbia Records and released his debut self-titled release in 1986. While the album had mild success, the label dropped Stuart, but it wasn't long until MCA signed him.

In 1991, Tempted was released with critical acclaim and commercial success, and Stuart used this opportunity to release several other albums, including This One's Gonna Hurt You. Stuart was known for more than just his music. In 1996 when he won his first-term of presidency of the Country Music Foundation, a position he remained in until 2002.
