Major Barbara Theater Tickets

Written by one of the great moralists of the 19th and 20th centuries, Major Barbara is a three-act play that takes an unashamed look at several important ethical questions in a humorous and profound manner. Written in 1905 by George Bernard Shaw, the play was one of his most successful, and it helped broaden his appeal to audiences on both side of the Atlantic. Purchase your Major Barbara tickets today to indulge in an evening of thoughtful and entertaining theater.

The London-born play made its United States Broadway debut in 1915, at the Playhouse Theater, and has since been resurrected on Broadway several times since. The 1956 revival received a Tony Award for Best Stage Technician, and was nominated again in 1980 for Best Reproduction of a Play.

The main character, Barbara, who is an officer in The Salvation Army, goes through a raft of moral quandaries when her organization begins taking money from an armaments manufacturer, who also happens to be her father. She leaves The Salvation Army, disillusioned by its acceptance of the money.

The kind of dilemma Barbara faces in the show is a running theme throughout much of Shaw's work. He was known as one of the more insightful humorists and moralists during his life, even while living in a time when many of his fellow British writers were famous for their wit. Shaw was also an avowed Humanist, a philosophy that is evident in most of his works, especially the essays he wrote for many years in some of London's most popular newspapers and magazines.
