Early life and origins
Madonna Louise Ciccone originally hails from Michigan, having been born in Bay City in the late 1950s. She spent her early childhood and adolescence in Rochester Hills, another Michigan town, before going on to attend the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where she studied both music and theater. From her early years, Madonna expressed an interest in performing, and she would ultimately move to New York City to pursue this interest after her commencement. After gaining notoriety as a member of a number of musical groups, she would go on to officially become a solo artist in the early 1980s.

Mainstream breakthrough
Her first true move into the wider public eye would come in 1982, when Madonna was offered a contract from the Warner Bros. affiliate Sire Records. After recording with Sire for roughly a year, she released an eponymous debut album. As the picture of 80s pop rock with lace, bangles and big hair, Madonna pushed the envelope. Over this era she starred in several movie titles “Desperately Seeking Susan,” “Shanghai Surprise” and “Who’s That Girl.” Coupled with her musical success, the films served to saturate the market in Madonna. Towards the late 80s and into the 90s, Madge turned on the sex appeal in Like a Prayer and Erotica, both albums touting underlying religious and sexual messages.

Madonna has gone on to become one of the most successful female artists of all time, ultimately releasing more than ten other albums, almost all of which were commercially successful. Included in these titles are MDNA, Like a Prayer, Like a Virgin, Bedtime Stories, Music, Confessions of a Dance Floor, American Life, Rebel Heart and True Blue. Her albums have resulted in a plethora of tours, and Madonna has become notorious for selling out large arenas and stadiums wherever she goes.

Critical acclaim
Few professional artists of any kind have achieved the same level of critical reception as Madonna. While she has been honored by numerous professional arts organizations, her Grammy Awards speak volumes to her ability. She has been nominated for a total of 28 Grammys and brought home the award seven times. The Golden Globes, annual awards given out for success in the film industry, have also shown her great respect and admiration. Madonna was also nominated both for her work as a musician and as an actress. Having received six nominations for Best Original Song, she took home the award in 2012 for her track "Masterpiece". Madonna also won her sole nomination for Best Actress after her 1997 role in the film Evita. Further, she has also been recognized time and time again for her philanthropic work, having become a prime example of awareness and dedication towards making the world a better place.
