Machial Theater Tickets

Machinal, a play written in 1928 by Sophie Treadwell, explores one of the most infamous murder cases in American history. It's the story of Ruth Snyder, who was trapped in the male-dominated society of her time, unable to break free and pursue her own ambitions. Eventually, she was driven to murder her husband, a crime that landed her in the electric chair. Treadwell's dramatization of the event provides an interesting perspective on this famous case, making Machinal tickets a commodity you just can't pass up.

When Ruth Snyder murdered her husband, Albert, in 1927, the story became a national sensation. The murder was gruesome, there was a younger lover (in this case, it was Ruth who had taken up with a traveling salesman named Henry Judd Gray), and it involved an upper- middle class family in Queens, N.Y. In fact, it was so scintillating that it also became the basis for the classic 1944 film Double Indemnity.

Treadwell's dramatization of the story helped to further ingrain it in the public's imagination, as Machinal quickly became a Broadway sensation upon its debut in 1928. Ever since that first performance, audiences and critics have agreed that Machinal is one of the true masterpieces of American theater.
