Lynyrd Skynyrd is a United States Southern band made popular during the 1970s. The name was derived from a former gym teacher/basketball coach many of the members knew from Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, Florida. Members included leader singer Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines, until their untimely death in a 1977 plane crash in Mississippi. Current members include Johnny Van Zant, Gary Rossington, Billy Powell, Ean Evans, Rickey Medlocke, Michael Cartellone, Mark Matejka, Dale Krantz Rossington and Carol Chase.
The band is best known for the American anthems such as “Free Bird” and “Sweet Home Alabama,” songs part of today’s most influential and successfully created music.
Originally named “My Backyard,” the band formed in 1964 when several friends collaborated on several songs and won a local Battle of the Bands contest. In early 1970, the band began to rehearse at the Hell House and perform at various venues. Tickets were on fire! After one of the band members left the band, guitarist Ed King filled in as bass player. After the recording of their first album, his move back to guitar created the well-known unique style of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s three-guitar mix. In the mid-1970s, the group’s popularity grew. Their second album, Second Helping, launched them to mega star status. As the years progressed, the band opened and toured for lead acts such as The Rolling Stones, The Who, Golden Earring and many more.
Other successful Lynyrd Skynyrd albums include Nuthin’ Fancy, Gimme Back My Bullets, One More from the Road and Street Survivors.
More than 30 years after the creation of Lynyrd Skynyrd and their influence and magical touch in the music scene still is present today. On March 13, 2006 the band made history by becoming inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
