Early Career
Kid Rock is a prime example of the mantra that persistence pays off. At a young age, the artist fell in love with rap music and hip hop culture. Predominantly inspired by The Beastie Boys, Kid Rock took to the road and started performing his own brand of rap-infused rock music. His first album, Grits Sandwiches for Breakfast, was released by Jive Records in 1990. During this time, Rock had small moments of local fame, but failed to gain a foothold on the radio, specifically due to his crude and explicit lyricism. After an unsuccessful tour, Kid Rock was dropped from the Jive label.

However, never one to give up, Rock moved to New York and continued to focus on music. He released his sophomore effort, The Polyfuze Method, under the record label Continuum. This was followed up by an EP (Fire It Up) and another full-length dubbed Early Mornin’ Stoned Pimp, but neither was able to bring Kid Rock mainstream notoriety. During this time, Rock moved back to the metro-Detroit area and formed a backing band, Twisted Brown Trucker.

Rise to fame
With other musicians to support him, Rock’s music took on a new sound. In 1998, Atlantic Records gambled on Rock’s breakthrough album Devil Without a Cause, which skyrocketed him to national fame. Suddenly Kid Rock was a celebrity that had gone platinum seven times. He saw the limelight often both due to his music and his relationship with Pamela Anderson, and his longtime DJ Uncle Kracker experienced solo success. All in all, Kid Rock quickly became a superstar and one of pop music’s most controversial icons.

Rock followed up his success with the album Cocky, which included the hit singles “Forever” and “Picture.” In 2010, Rock released Born Free, an album rich in collaborations from musicians such as Zac Brown, Trace Atkins, T.I. and Bob Seger. Rock followed this up in late 2012 with the record, Rebel Soul. With nine studio albums, Kid Rock has created some of the most fascinating amalgamations of rock, country and hip hop that make him an interesting and polarizing celebrity.
