134th Kentucky Derby
By Horse Crazy from Holland MI on 5/7/2008

We had a wonderful day at Churchill Downs with the exception of the heartbreaking aftermath of the Derby for Eight Bells. Our spot in Chalet 1 was ideal for star-watching, however, our ability to see the race was disappointing. Our tickets were to include access to a "viewing platform" which turned out to be nothing more than a spot on the sidewalk where we could look between the announcer's booths to see a bit of the track. For the Derby, people were lined up about 8 deep at that spot to try and catch a glimpse of the race. Other than that, the hospitality tent was nice.

Kentucky Derby Tickets

The Kentucky Derby is an annual horse racing competition that is, to put it mildly, the belle of the horse racing circuit. The Derby is affectionately referred to as the “most exciting two minutes in sports” and is one of the oldest thoroughbred races in the United States. Kicking off the first race of the Triple Crown series, the Kentucky Derby is a must see. Grab your best hat, Kentucky Derby tickets and head to Churchill Downs to catch the action!

Often described as the “the fastest two minutes in sports” or “the run for the roses,” the Derby is the first in a series of races that leads up to the Triple Crown. The Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing comprises the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes. The Kentucky Derby is held annually in Louisville, Kentucky, at Churchill Downs. One thing that sets the Derby apart from other races such as the Arlington Million is the extent of extravagance displayed along Millionaire’s Row as well as the all out party atmosphere on the Infield. Holding an inception date of 1875 correlates to the event’s many long-standing traditions such as an official spirit beverage named the Mint Julep; multicolored racing silks donned by jockeys; a blanket sewn with fresh roses and an official Derby dish called burgoo stew. Another venerable custom of the Kentucky Derby is the outlandish and exaggerated fashion displayed by both the upper echelon and Infield revelers. Ostentatious hats adorned with feathers, flowers and even depicted race scenarios sit atop the heads of men and women alike.

While fashions and traditions are big to-dos at the Kentucky Derby, the point of the day is the sport of horse racing. Names of colts, geldings and fillies like Seattle Slew, Secretariat, Super Saver, Citation and War Admiral echo on the dirt track as the current year’s contenders stamp their hooves in nervous anticipation. With a purse averaging $2 million USD, the Kentucky Derby may just be one of the richest as well as one of the oldest continuous sporting events stateside.

For one glorious day each year, the Kentucky Derby becomes the center of the equestrian and entertainment universe. The highly civilized happening is marked by the presence of fans from the world over. Defined not just by the fashion and Mint Juleps, but by the stampede of hooves on the track and sweat beading on the horses’ backs, the Derby is regal just by existing. Do not miss your chance to take part in the momentous gala that is the Derby. Ensure your exhilarating experience when you purchase your Kentucky Derby tickets today!
