While she now stands as one of the most polarizing and well known faces in all of pop music, Perry hails from relatively humble beginnings. Raised by two born again pastors in a Christian family, Perry spent most of her childhood and early life in Santa Barbara, California and traveled on trips where her parents established new churches. Though she was raised on predominantly secular music and gospel songs, Perry developed a fondness for all sorts of music at a young age and began taking vocal lessons at just nine years old. Building a passion for singing and playing the guitar in her early adolescence, Perry chose to leave high school early to pursue music. She completed her GED and finished high school at the age of 15 and, with the help of several local artists, went to Nashville to develop as a musician.
While it stands in stark contrast to the sound and subject matter of her later compositions, her religious upbringing makes it somewhat unsurprising that Perry’s first album was actually gospel music. Her debut record, Katy Hudson, was released in March 2001 on a Nashville label known as Red Hill. The album sold less than 500 copies, and Perry quickly transitioned to a more secular, pop sound. Following producer Glen Ballard, Perry would move from Nashville to Los Angeles in 2003. Once there, she would bounce around several record labels for a number of years before finally settling with Capitol Music Group. In 2008, she released her sophomore album One of the Boys, which experienced incredible commercial success, driven by the single “I Kissed a Girl.”
Rise to stardom
“I Kissed a Girl” quickly became a global hit, propelling album sales for One of the Boys and allowing Perry the support of her record label while she worked on future projects. Since then, she has released two other full length albums, Teenage Dream and Prism which have included a number of incredibly successful singles such as “T.G.I.F.,” “Waking up in Vegas,” “California Girls,” “Dark Horse” and others. Also establishing herself as a successful touring act, Perry routinely plays shows in sold out arenas in front of tens of thousands of people.
