The Madison Square Garden played home to Jay Z's retirement celebration concert on November 25, 2003. What was supposed to be a concert marking the end of Jay Z's creation of studio albums had performances by artists such as Missy Elliott, Beyonce, Ghostface Killah and Mary J. Blige. Soon after his retirement concert, Jay Z began to produce records for other artists, including Fort Minor, and even released a greatest hits compilation. The retirement concert was also the basis for his feature film "Fade to Black". Jay Z tickets for this concert went for incredible prices since fans thought it may be the last time they would see him perform live.

Jay Z did not stay retired for long however, as 2006 saw the release of his comeback album "Kingdom Come". The album has gone on to sell over 2 million albums in the U.S. and proved that even though once retired, Jay Z was far from done in the music business. Jay Z continued his success when he paired with Rihanna on the song "Umbrella". The song remained at number one for seven weeks on the Hot 100 chart. This was Jay Z's first number one single since he teamed with Beyonce for "Crazy in Love".

On November 6, 2007 Jay Z released "American Gangster", his tenth studio album. The album was inspired by the movie of the same name, but was not considered the official soundtrack. Jay Z himself has called the album "the indie-film version of American Gangster" as it portrays his life in comparison to the character Denzel Washington played in the movie. The number one status of this album on charts gave Jay Z the distinction of being tied with only Elvis Presley for the second most number one albums of all time.
