This nearly perennial entrant in the NCAA tournament has consistently taken on some of the best teams in the college game, proving to be a tough matchup on a regular basis. In the 1980s, they were led by legendary coach Johnny Orr, appearing in six national tournaments between 1985 and 1993, advancing to the Sweet 16 in 1986. Orr would coach and be a mentor to many players that would eventually be drafted into the NBA, most notably Jeff Grayer, Barry Stevens, Jeff Hornacek, Justus Thigpen, Victor Alexander and Fred Hoiberg.

After the Johnny Orr era, the Cyclones still managed to maintain their winning ways. From 1994 to 2013, the Cyclones went to the Big Dance eight times, making it all the way to the Elite Eight in 2000.

In 2011, Fred Hoidberg, a former protege of Johnny Orr, led the Iowa State team to a 23-11 record, with 12 of those wins coming against hard-nosed conference opponents.
