In the beginning
The musical is a collaboration between John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask. Mitchell wrote the script for the play while Trask composed the music and lyrics. Originally, Hedwig was written as a supporting character, and was based off of a German babysitter and prostitute that worked for Mitchell’s family during his adolescence. Mitchell based another character, Tommy, who was originally the protagonist, off of himself. The duo started workshopping material and originally showcased parts from what would become the musical in 1994 at the Squeezebox in New York City, where Trask headed the house band. Before focusing on the developing the plot, Mitchell and Trask played the songs in club settings to ensure they had organic rock energy. Inspired by glam rockers like David Bowie, the artists honed their material, eventually premiering Off-Broadway in 1998.

Hedwig becomes a phenomenon
Between February 1998 and April 2000, “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” played Off-Broadway more than 850 times. John Cameron Mitchell originally played the role of Hedwig. The first production won an Obie Award in 1998 as well as an Outer Critics Circle Award for best Off-Broadway musical. Since then “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” has been performed in major cities such as San Francisco, Boston, London and Los Angeles.

The first Broadway production of “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” opened in April 2014 at the Belasco Theatre. This production was directed by Michael Mayer and starred Neil Patrick Harris as Hedwig and Lena Hall as Hedwig’s husband, Yitzhak. This inaugural Broadway production garnered eight Tony Award nominations and won four, including awards for best revival of a musical, best lead actor in a musical and best featured actress in a musical.
