The band formed in 1985 just outside of Los Angeles and enjoyed commercial success almost instantly. While the group has undergone countless lineup changes and adjustments over the years, the most recognizable incarnation of the group featured Axl Rose as the vocalist, Izzy Stradlin on rhythm guitar, Slash playing lead guitar, Steven Adler on the drums and bassist Duff McKagan. After playing shows around Los Angeles and the surrounding area for the better part of a year, the group was signed to Geffen Records, who caught wind of the band as they generated buzz up and down the West Coast. From that point on, there was no turning back, as the group was quickly elevated to superstardom for its unbelievable rock sound.
Rise to fame
Few bands experience the same sort of expedited path to fame as Guns ’N’ Roses. In an era when the popular music scene was largely beginning to move away from rock, they were credited with bringing hard rock back, and doing so in a hurry. After signing with Geffen in 1986, the group hit the studio hard and released its first full-length album, Appetite for Destruction, barely a year later in 1987. The album hung around on the popular music charts for almost a year before reaching its peak position at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, solidifying the group as rock immortals. Between 1988 and 1991, the group released three more albums, all of which reached either the No. 2 or No. 1 spot on that chart. Those records, G ’N’ R Lies, Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II, are still considered amongst the greatest rock albums of all time.
Lineup changes and the new era
After the release of four charting albums in less than five years, the group was understandably burned out. In July 1990, after failing to perform well during recordings of the track “Civil War” for the Use Your Illusion double album, drummer Steven Adler was fired from the band. Adler had been struggling with addiction to both heroin and cocaine, and the group felt it best if he take some time away from music. Following Adler’s departure, almost all members of the original lineup would leave the group at one point or another for various reasons. Currently, Axl Rose is the only original member of the band still touring with the band. He is joined by Richard Fortus on rhythm guitar, Tommy Stinson on bass, Frank Ferrer playing drums, Dizzy Reed on piano and DJ Ashba and Ron Thal playing lead guitars. The group has sold more than 100 million records throughout its 30-plus year tenure, making it one of the best-selling rock bands of all time.
