A historical past
The Green Bay Packers were founded in 1918 by Earl “Curly” Lambeau and George Whitney Calhoun. They became a semi-pro team in 1921 and immediately established themselves as a force to be reckoned with, winning more than 13 league championships, nine before the Super Bowl even existed. No team has won as many championships as the Green Bay Packers, which has earned the city the nickname, “Titletown USA.” This impressive record includes the three consecutive titles won in 1929, 1930 and 1931 under Coach Lambeau. The Packers repeated this feat in ’65, ’66 and ’67 under Coach Vince Lombardi, after whom the National Football League’s Super Bowl trophy is named.
The Packers franchise is home to many big-name football hall of famers including coaches Earl Lambeau and Vince Lombardi and players such as Cal Hubbard, Don Hutson and Reggie White. In addition, the team had one of the most iconic players in football history, Brett Favre. This quarterback led the team to eight division championships, five NFC championship games and two Super Bowl appearances, one of which they won.
What sets the Green Bay Packers apart from the other teams is that they have been a publicly owned, non-profit corporation since August 18, 1923. This means that the Packers are essentially owned by their fans, making the support for the team unwavering.
An iconic team
A team that has achieved such great success does not do so without a few rivalries. For the Green Bay Packers, the Chicago Bears play this role. The Packers-Bears rivalry dates back to 1921 and is one of the most famous in the entire football league. Both teams are in the NFC North division so they play each other at least twice every regular season. These games usually draw the biggest crowds as their teams continue to bump heads any time they cross paths, making for passion on and off the field.
One of the most historic stadiums in football history is the Packers’ home stadium, Lambeau Field. After nearly six decades of great football, the field has been the site for many historical moments, including the first NFL Championship game in 1961 and the “Ice Bowl” in December 1967, when the temperature was 13 degrees below zero. In addition, Lambeau’s structure allows for optimal viewing with no obstructions, regardless of whether you’re in the first row or the last. Not only does it embody the coveted retro feel, but despite its recent developments, the stadium maintains the original seating bowl. That means you have the opportunity to see some of today’s great players in the same venue that housed some of the pastrsquo;s legends.
