After an unsuccessful stint with the group Kneejerk, Turner accepted an invitation to join Million Dead in 2001. After four years and two studio albums, he split from the band to pursue music that he believed had had more meaning - namely, acoustic folk and country.

Turner's 2006 debut solo EP, Campfire Punkrock, also featured his backup band, The EP received good critical reviews, leading to a full album release in January 2007 titled Sleep is for the Weak. It turned into another critical success for Turner and his new band.

In 2010, Turner hit the tour circuit with Green Day and Joan Jett & The Blackhearts. In 2012, he released the album Last Minutes and Lost Evenings, a collection of songs that introduced him to fans outside of the U.K. And Turner soon followed that up with his fifth studio album, The Burbank.
