Harris spent much of her childhood in North Carolina, before moving to Woodbridge, Va., where she graduated at the top of her class. Despite being book smart, Harris decided to take a dramatic scholarship at the University of North Carolina to hone in on her true love - music. There, she was able to listen to and learn how to play songs by the legendary Bob Dylan, before moving to New York to sing folk and club music on her own.
After a shaky start to her career - she got pregnant while making her first record, Gliding Bird, before her label went under - she was able to eventually make a name for herself in 1971.
