Emanuel Ax is an American pianist known internationally as a classical virtuoso. He also holds an esteemed position as a teacher at the world-renowned Juilliard School. Ax has won multiple awards and recognitions, including the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition, the Avery Fisher Prize and he has been named a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Ax began training as a pianist at the age of six, in Lviv, Ukraine. He moved with his parents to Winnipeg, Canada where he continued to study piano as a member of the Junior Musical Club of Winnipeg. As a teenager, he trained at Juilliard and earned his bachelor’s degree in French at Columbia University.

Throughout his professional career, Ax has been an advocate of contemporary musical artists. He has worked with the likes of John Adams, Christopher Rouse and Bright Sheng. One of his most notable collaborations has been with the famed cellist Yo-Yo Ma. The two have been playing together since 1973, when they first appeared in public at the Marlboro Music School and Festival.
