The Pistons first existed as the Fort Wayne Pistons based out of Fort Wayne, Indiana. They were founded in 1941 as members of the National Basketball League. In 1948 the team joined the National Basketball Association (NBA). Due to the city’s small size the team was relocated to Detroit, Michigan, in 1957. The move signified a long period of franchise losses. During the 1960s-70s notable players who helped build the team included Dave Bing, Bob Lanier and Dave DeBusschere. After a delayed period of advancing up the NBA ladder, the Pistons finally improved with the help of point guard Isiah Thomas, center Bill Laimbeer and guard Vinnie Johnson.
Members of the Central Division of the Eastern Conference, Piston rivals include the Chicago Bulls and the Indiana Pacers, as well as their interdivisional rivals the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers. The Detroit Pistons advance to the NBA Playoffs often. In 2003, the Pistons beat the Los Angeles Lakers 4-1 to become NBA Champions! The following year, the Pistons once again earned a spot in the NBA Finals, but could not defeat the San Antonio Spurs.
