Koechner started his comedy career doing improv with The Second City comedy troupe in Chicago, where he graduated in 1994. The following year, he landed a gig as a cast member of Saturday Night Live and met future comedy partners David Allen and Will Ferrell. While working at SNL, he became known for his spot-on impersonations of celebrities like Charlie Sheen, Oliver Stone, Burt Reynolds and Mike Ditka. He also created some original characters that were based on work he did with Second City, some of which he would eventually use in his movie career. While filming the mockumentary Dill Scallion, Koechner collaborated with Allen to create the character Gerald "T-Bone" Gibbons. Since then, he’s appeared in films such as Anchorman, 40-Year-Old Virgin, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, Snakes on a Plane, The Dukes of Hazzard and Thank You for Smoking.
