’American Idol’ and early years
In 2006, Chris Daughtry auditioned to be a contestant on the fifth season of the popular show “American Idol,” in which contestants vie for recognition and a recording deal by showcasing their musical talents. While he would not go on to win the competition, he did receive an incredible amount of acclaim for his fourth place finish, singing his way into the hearts of the shows audience. Shortly following his stint on “American Idol,” it became clear that he was going to be a mainstay in the popular music industry for some time. He was made an offer to take on the lead singing role for the band Fuel, though he turned it down in order to form his own group, Daughtry. In the summer of 2006, RCA Records signed him to a contract and began to hold auditions for the other members of his band.
The group’s lineup came to be comprised of Josh Paul on bass guitar, Josh Steely as lead guitarist, Chris Daughtry as lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist, Jeremy Brady on guitar and Joey Barnes on drums. Ultimately, Barnes and Brady would go on to be replaced by two new members, Elvio Fernandes and Brian Craddock, respectively. The group released its debut album, titled Daughtry, in November 2006 and saw considerable success instantly. The album was bolstered by numerous ballads, most notably “It’s Not Over,” “What I Want” and “Home.” The success of the record led the group to begin touring across the U.S., beginning a series of tours that would remain ongoing throughout the release of several more records across the next several years.
Other albums and recognition
After the release of Daughtry and the group’s established success as a touring act, it went on to put out three more albums: Leave This Town, Break the Spell and Baptized. The three records hit stores in 2009, 2011 and 2013, respectively, and each came with a corresponding tour bearing the name of the album. Between the Break the Spell and Baptized tours, the group launched the Bigger than Life Tour in 2013. In addition to its commercial success, the band has been honored by a number of the largest organizations in music criticism, including winning six Billboard Music Awards, two World Music Awards and five American Music Awards.
