From the early part of his career when he was the lead singer of his family group, to his time as a guitar player behind soul icon Sam Cooke, to his years writing and recording hits of his own, Womack built a Hall of Fame career. His sultry, Solomon Burke-sounding voice resonated with musicians as varied as A HREF= " "target="_blank">Rod Stewart and The Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin and Joe Cocker. In fact, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009. It was the crowning achievement of a 50-year career.

Womack started working as a professional musician when he was just 10 years old, performing as a singer with his parents and older brother. Eventually, they would come under the mentorship of Sam Cooke, who guided the Womacks into stardom under the moniker, The Valentinos. For Bobby, it would be the beginning of a long working relationship and friendship with Cooke, which lasted until Cooke's death in 1964.
