I've been going to concerts my whole life and I've seen some legendary bands and musicians. I've seen The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Chuck Berry, The Ramones, The Grateful Dead (with Jerry Garcia), B.B King, Buddy Guy, Willie Nelson, Tony Bennet, and last but not least, Mr. Bob Dylan.
I've read reviews, both good and bad about Bob Dylan's concerts and stage presance, many people have posted that they were very dissapointed with his performance. Being a musician/songwriter myself I can honestly see how the years have taken a toll on Dylan.
Not everybody can be like Mic Jagger, running around on stage and doing the "cocksure strut", everybody expresses themselves differently on stage, especially in their old age. I've even read reviews about how "cold" Bob Dylan was to the audience. Look, if you go to a concert expecting the person you paid to see to be all chatty with the crowd, you're not always going to get what you want.
The first time I saw Bob Dylan, the crowd kept on cheering after he and his band took a final bow and Bob was attempting to address the crowd because it was the first installment of The Bob Dylan Show Tour with Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp. The crowd kept cheering and didn't give him a chance at all to say what he had wanted to say, then he walked off stage.
Does Bob sound a lot different live than he does on his records? Yes he does, he's surely not going to sing and play the same as he did when he recorded "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" or "Like A Rolling Stone". I hate assuming things but, I assume that the people that wrote reviews complaining about his performance and how he changes the style of how his songs are played now, aren't educated very well about music, and I highly assume they aren't musicians themselves.
The man's music has aged along with him and it has evolved so much, which is what makes his concerts and performance amazing experiences for everybody, young and old, well not everybody, just people that honestly love music and understand it, especially when it is played by somebody who has been playing and writing his own music for pretty much 85% of his life.
So before you go on some website to post a review and whine about how dissapointed you are with a certain band or musician's performance, especially when they're as old as they are, think about what I've said here.
