Born in the town of Ada, Oklahoma, Shelton showed an extreme interest in music from a very young age. His family recounts that he was constantly singing as a child. By the time his early adolescent years rolled around, Shelton had developed considerable ability to play the guitar and began writing songs. He gained notoriety as a musician in his community, often performing at town events. Knowing that he wanted to pursue music full time, Shelton moved to Nashville, Tennessee, after his graduation from high school and began looking for work in the music industry. Ultimately, he gained a job helping out a music publishing company in the early 1990s and stayed there for several years while also honing his craft as a musician and songwriter.
Rise to fame
In the late 1990s, Shelton began to gain commercial notoriety around Nashville, and his efforts were recognized by an imprint of Warner Bros. Music Group, which ultimately offered him a recording contract in 2001. He began work on several singles immediately, and his first big break came with the release of a track entitled “Austin.” The song charted in the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot Country Tracks chart, and it stayed atop the list for a staggering five weeks, cementing Shelton as a force to be reckoned with. Later that year, Shelton released an eponymous debut album. The record was a hit, largely driven by the success of “Austin,” and earned gold certification for selling more than half a million units. Shelton began to tour the Southwest and quickly curried the favor of country music fans across the nation.
