Black Angels consists of Stephanie Bailey on the drums, Christian Bland on the guitar, Jennifer Raines on the keys and Alex Maas lighting up songs with his vocals. The band’s name comes from the Velvet Underground’s 1972 classic "The Black Angel’s Death Song." The group formed in Austin, Texas, in 2004, believing in rock ’n’ roll and the “Turn On, Tune In, Drone Out” mantra.

In 2005, Black Angels released its self-titled debut EP. The album quickly earned the group a cult following and was well-received by both music critics and the masses. In 2006, Black Angels released its debut full-length studio album, Passover. Spurred by success, the band went on a multi-city tour across North America, stopping by the South by Southwest Music Conference to perform.
