|One of the most recognizable pop acts of all time, the Backstreet Boys illustrious career has spanned more than two decades. Originally from Florida, the group consists of five vocalists: A.J. McLean, Howie Dorough, Nick Carter, Brian Littrell and Kevin Richardson. When they first came together in the 1990s, nobody had expectations of them becoming the single greatest selling boy band of all time. In the spring of 1993, Brian Littrell received a phone call from Kevin Richardson, his cousin, asking about his interest in joining a band. He auditioned over the phone, on the spot, and the group began to take form. After joining with the other three members, the boys began to garner attention by traveling around Florida on a sort of unofficial tour, playing shows where they could get them. Their first high-profile act came in May 1992, when the five young men performed at SeaWorld in Orlando. From there on out, their success would come in leaps and bounds, ultimately elevating them to a level of fame achieved by few acts since.
Over the course of the 1990s and 2000s, the Backstreet Boys were marketed predominantly towards younger female fans. Their promotional team would leave free copies of their tapes at makeup chain stores like J.C. Penney Co. and at camps for dancers and cheerleaders, building a fan base from a specific target demographic. To say the least, this method was incredibly effective. While there are many very telling metrics, no single statistic is quite as impressive as the fact that they sold more than 130 million albums globally as of 2014. These sales figures designate them as the most commercially successful boy band of all time.
While the group has released many albums, some of their most popular works have been the eponymous Backstreet Boys, Black and Blue and Millennium. Millennium was recorded while the group was abroad in Europe and lifted them to new heights. Driven by the radio-friendly pop singles “Show Me The Meaning of Being Lonely,” “I Want it That Way,” “All I Have to Give” and “Larger than Life,” the album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts and sold more than a million copies during the week of its release. The album ’s success would extend far beyond its platinum designation, as it would go on to achieve more than 12 million units sold domestically and over 40 million total. After a brief hiatus from touring and recording, the group reformed in 2004 and began recording their 2005 album, Never Gone, which brought on a world tour of the same name.
