Before they became airborne, the Atlanta Hawks were grounded as the Buffalo Bisons when the basketball franchise was first established in 1946. Holding a number of championship, conference and divisional titles in their talons, the Hawks have become a hometown institution. Atlanta Hawks tickets are a big score for any fan, local or satellite.
Part way into their first season the team took to the sky where they became the Tri-Cities Blackhawks based out of Moline, Illinois. In 1951, the team relocated to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and became known as simply “the Hawks.” During this time period, the Hawks were one of the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) worst basketball teams. They finally moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where they were named the St. Louis Hawks. With young players and new surroundings, the team eventually became one of the most feared basketball contenders in the league.
Morphing from one form to another over the next 20 years, the franchise nested in Atlanta, Georgia, where they emerged in 1968 as the Atlanta Hawks. An element of the Eastern Conference’s Southeastern Division, the Hawks, like all professional sports teams, have seen their share of ups and downs. Originally part of the National Basketball League, the Hawks later became a member of the NBA when the two leagues merged in 1949. Notable names from the Basketball Hall of Fame and individual award holders from the Atlanta Hawks include Dominique Wilkins, Moses Malone and Bob Pettit.
