| U2 Biography |
 |
What began as a simple note, posted by a fourteen year old looking for musicians to start a band in a Dublin middle school in 1976, stands today as one of the most iconic rock bands in the history of music. With U2 releasing their latest studio album No Line on the Horizon on March 3, 2009, these living legends of Rock are about to tour once again and TicketsNow can get you to the year's biggest show with U2 tickets of your own.
U2 humbly began their journey to music superstardom when Larry Mullen Jr., a student at Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Dublin, Ireland, posted a note on a bulletin board looking for others musicians to start a band. After several members began playing in Mullen's kitchen, a young Bono walked in and quickly took command of the room and of the band. The first iteration of U2, initially known as Feedback, began to learn how to play their instruments along with learning how to play cover songs of their favorite bands. Feedback soon changed their name to Hype as the young musicians began to find their musical "sweet spot." The once large band was down to four members as Hype wanted a more traditional lineup. In their last performance as Hype, the group's fifth member walked off stage and the group finished playing their set with original songs and a new name: U2.
After winning a talent show in 1978, U2 was able to record a demo with their prize money. Soon after, U2 released an EP (only released in Ireland) titled Three. The chart success of the EP earned U2 a show in London and the chance to release a single a little over a year later. Along with a new decade came a record deal for U2 and the release of their first international single 11 O'Clock Tick Tock. Soon after came a critical point in the career of U2 as their first full-length studio album Boy was released that October. The release of Boy earned U2 a tour across Europe and the US and helped to form what would become the band's exhilarating live performances.
After U2 released their second album, October, in 1981 the group broke up for a brief time after Bono and The Edge had spiritual differences in the recording studio. The break up was short-lived however, and U2 was quickly back making music. U2 released War in 1983. This album helped to establish U2 as a group with lyrics that very clearly stated their opinions on the issues of the time. U2's strong beliefs would help to shape the group's future recordings and their lyrics would help to get them mainstream media attention. War became the first U2 album to debut at #1 on the UK charts, and contained their first international hit in New Year's Day.
Over the next decade U2 became world-wide activists and well as a top musical act. The defining moment for U2 in the 80's came during their now historic Live Aid performance at Wembley Stadium. Bono's passion and charisma on stage opened the eyes of millions of music fans and helped U2 to become the "biggest act of the 80's" according to Rolling Stone. Some experts even argued that U2 was "the band that matters most, maybe even the only band that matters." With their mix of emotional lyrics and incredibly live presence, U2 had become the biggest band in the world.
The next several years had U2 experimenting with their sound and continually touring the World. Yet, after a couple poorly received albums, U2 began to fall off the top of the music mountain in the late 90's. At the start of the New Millennium, U2 famously declared that they were "reapplying for the job of best band in the world." With this proclamation by U2 came the 2000 album All That You Can't Leave Behind. The album released to great acclaim and quickly put U2 back on top in the music world both commercially and critically. The album earned U2 three Grammy awards and debuted at #1 in 22 countries. The tour that soon followed also let music fans everywhere know that U2 once again considered themselves the best and weren't planning on going anywhere, any time soon.
Once again at the top of their game, U2 releases No Line on the Horizon to the thrill of their millions of fans around the world. With a tour soon to follow, U2 is ready to become the must see act of 2009. You too can see U2 live with the help of great U2 tickets from TicketsNow. |
