Formed in 1946, the NBA was originally known as the Basketball Association of America in New York City. Three years later the name changed to the National Basketball Association after merging with the rival National Basketball League. The NBA is the United States’ only professional men’s basketball league consisting of 30 teams, with one located in Canada.
