The Niners won the NFC Championship in 1981, 1984, 1988, 1989, and 1994. Their incredible five Super Bowl Championships took place in 1981, 1984, 1988, 1989, and 1994.
History
The 49ers are members of the Western Division of the National Football Conference in the NFL. Their first game with the NFL took place on September 17, 1950. When they first began play in 1946 when they were members of the All-American Football Conference. The San Francisco 49ers joined the NFL in 1950 when the AAFC merged into the older league. The 49ers paved the way as the first professional sports franchise based in the West Coast. Because the Cleveland Browns were dominating most of the conference, the 49ers were only able to make it to second place in the league during their first few years. It took until 1957 for the San Francisco 49ers to enjoy their first success as NFL embers. They lost the opening game of the season, but would go on to win the next three games away from home against the St. Louis Rams, Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers. When they returned home to play the Chicago Bears again, they fell behind 17-7. It was during this game that owner of the 49ers, Tony Morabito, collapsed of a heart attack and died during the game. The players were motivated to bring in a win for Morabito, scoring 14 unanswered points and winning the game 21-17. In that same year, the famous “Alley Oop” play took place in a game against the Detroit Lions. They ended the 1957 season with an 8-4 record, tying with the Detroit Lions for the Western Division title.
By the beginning of the 60’s, the team began using the “shotgun formation” where the quarterback lines up seven yards behind the center, giving him extra time to throw. The Chicago Bears were the team that found a way through this formation, shutting them out with a 31-0 score. Head Coach Dick Nolan was hired for the 1968 season, and by the 1970 season the 49ers record was 7-1-1 with their only loss being a one point difference against the Oakland Raiders. They defeated the Oakland Raiders 38-7, bringing them their first NFC West Division championship. After 1973, the 49ers lost their top position of the NFC West, giving them their worst record since 1969. By 1975, Nolan had his last season with the 49ers and was replaced by Monte Clark as the new Head Coach. Clark only stayed for one season after being fired by general manager Joe Thomas, putting Ken Meyer in the position. They ended the season at 5-9, marking the beginning of the worst stretch the 49ers have faced yet.
O.J. Simpson was acquired from the Buffalo Bills in 1977, and there were hopes that it would be enough to help the team make a huge turnaround. Unfortunately a number of other bad moves took place, keeping the 49ers in the path of disaster. The 1978 season ended in 2-14, their only two wins against the Cincinnati Bengals and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Simpson did all he could in terms of rushing, but it wasn’t enough to get the team out of the slump. After sustaining a number of knee troubles, Simpson was nearing the end of his career.
New head coach Bill Walsh was hired in the 1978 off-season, and his first move was acquiring quarterback Joe Montana. The 49ers got off to a strong start for the beginning of the 80’s, but the team still wasn’t ready for the bigger games of the season, and would lose eight games in a row. However, 1981 was their final crowning moment after years of no success. This was the season that “the catch” took place. In a game against the Dallas Cowboys, Montana threw the ball off-balance to Dwight Clark, who leapt up to catch the ball, tying the game at 27. The extra point put them in the lead. The leap was on the cover of Sports Illustrated that same week, and even appeared in a 2005 commercial for Gatorade. After a fumble was recovered by Jim Stuckey, the 49ers took home the win and a trip to their first ever Super Bowl appearance. The Cincinnati Bengals were also appearing in their first Super Bowl. They would have a majority lead by halftime with a 20-0 score, and would hold the lead despite Cincinnati coming up from behind with a final score of 26-21. It was a huge complete turnaround for the team after having recovered from a 2-14 record in the 1979 season.
The 49ers had one of their best seasons ever with a record of 15-1-0, which set the record for most regular season wins (which was beaten a year later by the 1985 Chicago Bears, followed by the 1998 Minnesota Vikings, 2004 Pittsburgh Steelers, and 2007 New England Patriots). The 90’s were the best time for the 49ers, given that they won four of their five total Super Bowl Championships. The first was 1981 (XVI), with the following three in 1984 (XIX), 1988 (XXIII), and 1989(XXIV).
