Phish
As fans have long awaited and end to their hiatus, first started in 2000 as the band silently walked off the stage at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View California to the Beatles “Let it Be”and then started again in 2004 after a brief summer tour, cult favorite jam band Phish has finally returned to the stage. The foursome will begin their latest tour with a three show stint at the Hampton Coliseum in Virginia before heading out for a series of shows through late June. With rumors of a Phish reunion starting back in 2006, the return of the band couldn’t have come soon enough for fans across the country. Phish tickets sold at an incredible pace for their three show reunion, and tickets for the summer tour are expected to go even faster. Phish tickets are now available at TicketsNow.
Phish became a reality at the University of Vermont in 1983 when guitarists Trey Anastasio and Jeff Holdsworth joined with drummer Jon Fishman and bassist Mike Gordon to form a band. The group would spend the next several years playing in dormitory basements and experiment with recording and concept albums. Over this time Phish began to actively involve their loyal fans in live shows. This creative technique led to a large cult following for the group that would help them get bigger shows and even played a part in their recordings. One of Phish’s more unique offerings involved band members throwing a beach ball into the audience and only playing notes each time their ball was hit. This made their audiences an intrical part in their live sessions and recordings.
To keep up with their non-traditional approach to the music industry, Phish was one of the first groups to launch a newsgroup. This only helped to expand the ever growing fan base of the Phish, and helped to get them on the map at Elektra Records (who signed the group in 1991). Their new record deal soon led to the release of the album “A Picture of Nectar” and the group’s first major tour among the Widespread Panic lineup. Phish was now playing with popular bands of the time such as Blues Traveler, The Spin Doctors and Widespread Panic.
In the mid 90’s Phish became a staple at major amphitheaters across the country. As their fan base grew, so did their stage efforts. Shows became even more elaborate and Phish cemented their name as one of the countries great jam bands. Summer tours became a staple for Phish, and fans lined up every year to get their hands on Phish tickets for that summer’s show. After a brief hiatus from 200-2002, Phish began to perform live once again. Their current run came to an end in grand fashion at the Coventy festival in 2004. An estimated 65,000 fans, most having to abandon their cars and walk miles to get to the rain soaked festival, watched an emotion Phish come to tears several times during their set. The group ended the show with heartfelt farewell from Anastasio and walked off stage seemingly for the last time. Rolling Stone has since called Phish “the most important band of the Nineties.”
