Eastern Conference members the New York Islanders were established in 1972. With their home ice of Nassau Coliseum being located in Uniondale, New York, the Islanders share their geographic territory with two other franchises in the New York metropolitan area, the New Jersey Devils and the New York Rangers. The intrastate rivalry between the Islanders and Rangers is infamous, being dubbed branded the Battle of New York by hockey fans.
Though their first season gave them a rough start, it wasn't long before the Isles earned dynasty designation. Awarded the dynasty honor, New York Islanders tickets became a tricky article to obtain. In 1975 the Islanders pulled off one of the most amazing turnarounds in NHL chronicles when they overtook their Rangers rival down in a best of three first round series. After pulling an about face on the Pittsburgh Penguins by returning to the fold from being three down to take a best of seven series, the Islanders continued to stun.
Though the team was only stopped in their tracks by the Philadelphia Flyers, the hard hitters were not discouraged. Since then the New York Islanders have earned multiple Division and Conference titles as well as the dynasty moniker by taking home four consecutive Stanley Cup Championships. |
